Ukrainian Films in Support of Oleg Sentsov
On May 11, 2014 after taking part in a protest in the Crimea, Oleg Sentsov was illegally detained by Russian occupation authorities and later convoyed to Moscow. Oleg Sentsov is alleged preparation of terrorist acts. Representatives of Ukrainian film society, Ukrainian government, Russian cinema union, Confederation of Unions of Cinematographers of CIS and Baltic countries, the European Film Academy as well as the world-known film directors (Pedro Almodovar, Wim Wenders, Mike Leigh, Krzysztof Zanussi, Andrzej Wajda, Ken Loach) appealed to Russian authorities condemning the illegal arrest and demanding to release Sentsov. During the closing ceremony of the Moscow Film Festival head of the Union of Cinematographers Sergey Trymbach also demanded to release Oleg Sentsov.
While Russian justice considers Sentsov to be a Russian citizen, his rights were repeatedly violated (his lawyer and Ukrainian consul in Moscow were not allowed to visit him). Thus, "Amnesty International" qualified detention of Oleg Sentsov as illegal.
Oleg Sentsov, as well as other Ukrainians illegally detained by Russia, is the symbol of courage, freedom and unity of Ukrainian people who see Ukraine as a prosperous European country.
